Sex worker says rape accused ‘insane’

An emotionally charged woman, who claims she was raped by a policeman, has labelled him “insane”, and told a court he is a murderer who hunts down prostitutes.
“It is in his blood,” the woman screamed.

The former sex worker, who is testifying in the kidnapping, rape, robbery and attempted murder trial of Hilton policeman Riaan van Rensburg, made the comments under cross-examination by Van Rensburg’s advocate, Brad Osbourne.

Osbourne himself was not spared the woman’s wrath, and endured several insults hurled his way.

“I am tired of looking at you. Someday God will punish you for defending rapists and murderers. Do not believe the lies he is telling you. He is insane… he needs help,” the woman told Osbourne.
She was warned by Pietermaritzburg Regional Court Magistrate Bhekizitha Phoswa to give her evidence in a dignified manner and refrain from insulting an officer of the court.

“We are here to establish the truth. You are getting out of hand now and I am going to keep you in line,” the magistrate said.

Van Rensburg, a 45-year-old Hilton warrant officer, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His defence on the rape charge was that he had consensual sex with the 31-year-old complainant. The woman testified earlier that Van Rensburg had subdued her by threatening her with his firearm, and also stabbed her when she resisted. – Daily News
