Honorary doctorate for Ramaphosa

The University of Venda in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, will on Friday confer Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa with an honorary doctorate in Law, the Presidency said.

Spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said in a statement on Thursday that the Council and the Senate of the University of Venda had agreed to confer the honorary doctorate on Ramaphosa for “his role in overseeing the drafting of South Africa’s first democratic constitution”.

Ramaphosa previously served as a chancellor of the University of Venda from 1997-2009. He also served as University of Venda’s Special Ambassador where he launched a successful one billion rand capital projects campaign for infrastructural development at the institution.

Ramaphosa is a graduate of law from the University of South Africa. He enrolled at Unisa after his expulsion from the University of the North (Turfloop) for political activism, which arose from the organisation of the pro-Frelimo rallies in 1974 under the banner of the then South African Students Organisation (SASO).

The University of Venda will this year, 2016, be hosting a graduation ceremony for 456 students who qualified in various academic fields, including among others agriculture, education, natural sciences, law, management sciences and environmental sciences. – African News Agency
