Zuma Secondary sweeps clean at Copa

First time winners … JG Zuma Secondary School from KwaZulu-Natal won their maiden Copa Coca-Cola title last weekend in Bloemfontein

The KZN school claimed gold as well as the handful individual awards that were on offer

JG Zuma Secondary School were crowned the 2016 Copa Coca-Cola National Champions last Sunday in Bloemfontein, while the teams coach and three players also went on to scoop all the individual awards that were on offer.

The KwaZulu-Natal school outwitted Mpumalanga’s St Marks High School with a 2-0 victory at the Tempe military Base sports grounds to lift the 2016 Copa Coca-Cola trophy, which is their maiden title of this competition and claim R60 000 in prize money.

Zuma Secondary coach, Caba Mathaba, scooped the Coach of the Tournament award, while Vuyo Madeza, Lindokuhle Phakathi and Senzikile Njapha all scooped the goalkeeper of the tournament, Player of the Tournament and Top Goal Scorer accolades respectively.

In the final of the tournament, brilliant goals by Sanele Ngubane and Senzekile Njapha ensured that their school adds their name to the competition’s history.

Second place finishers St Marks did also put in a good strong fight with several goal scoring falling in their path, but ultimately failed to convert. In addition to the silver trophy and medals they received, the latter also claimed R30 000 in prize money while the hosts HTS Louise Botha finished third overall to pick the bronze trophy and medals, as well as R25 000.

The prize money received by the top three schools will be used towards the development of their school’s educational or sporting facilities.

Are-Fadimeheng from North West province finished fourth; Zamokuhle Junior secondary from the Western Cape secured a fifth place spot, while Eastern Cape’s Desmond Impilo Tutu High School came in sixth.

Orion High School (Northern Cape) came in seventh place, Haggai Combined School (Limpopo) in eighth and lastly Rosina Sedibane High School representing Gauteng completed the provinces and came in ninth place.

SASFA President, Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko said he was happy to see the immense talent that was showcased at the competition by all the school that took part.

“The Schools Football Association is proud of the amount of talent that has been displayed during the weekend of the National Finals, the various scouts who were on the ground are pleased to have found an overflowing pool to select from. We are proud to be a partner to Coca-Cola in what has been another successful Copa Coca-Cola campaign.”
