Magashule leads children’s walk in Madiba’s honour

Children thanked Tata for his contribution towards their legal protection and government financial assistance they receive today

The Premier of the Free State Ace Magashule led a walk to the iconic Free State tourism jewel, Navil Hill, on Tuesday in remembrance of the late former President Nelson Mandela whose towering stature is perched on the hill’s summit.

Ordinary South Africans were given a platform to profess their appreciation for what Mandela had done for them. Among them were children who were also there to show their gratitude and light candles in Mandela’s memory.
A group of children from Ipopeng Township in Mangaung were exuberant and eager to pay tribute to Madiba. One of those who braved the chilly evening breeze atop the hill in their short pants and short-sleeve T-shirts is Thabo Mokoena, who was accompanied by his friends.

“We wanted to come here but we did not know how. We were happy when our local councillor told us buses were available if we wanted to pay our last respects to our father Nelson Mandela. This is an event we could not miss, especially the opportunity to say goodbye to our beloved grandfather,” said Mokoena.

Mokoena’s mother passed away on April 13 this year. He now lives with his father and his four siblings. His father is working odd jobs and as a result the family barely survives. Mokoena said the situation could be a lot worse was it not for the government grant.

“We receive a child support grant. Our father says his salary is not enough; this grant helps to cover some of our needs. I thank Tata (Father) Mandela for this. I know it is because of him that we children of South Africa receive the grant. I want to say thank you for everything you have done for us, Tata,”
said Mokoena.
