Mantsopa mayor lashes ‘selfish’ DA

Mantsopa Local Municipality executive mayor Sello Ntepe has accused the DA party of manipulating genuine municipal problems to score cheap political points after a councillor of the opposition allegedly instigated a group of residents to dump garbage at town hall.

Problems with some of the municipality’s refuse collection vehicles earlier in the week saw garbage collection teams failing to do their rounds on time. The municipality was later able to get all its vehicles back on the road and collecting garbage as usual.

But this was after DA councillor Tani Halse had already mobilised a group of residents to collect some of the garbage which they dumped at the municipal offices to protest against the delays caused by vehicles breaking down.

“It is pitiful that opposition parties resort to using genuine challenges of the municipality to drive their own selfish agenda, misleading the community in the process” said the mayor.

He added: “Vehicles had broken down. They went in for repairs hence the matter was immediately attended to the next day.”

Ntepe also criticised the DA for allegedly lying about the municipality being dysfunctional, adding the opposition should be ashamed of trying to mislead people all for political gain.

With the 2016 municipal elections drawing ever closer, Ntsepe said he was not surprised by the DA’s underhanded schemes.

Meanwhile the ANC has expressed its full confidence in the mayor and the leadership of Mantsopa.

“The leadership in that municipality is solid and we’re more than content with the work currently being done there,” said ANC provincial secretary William Bulwane.

Bulwane further stated the ANC will not be distracted in delivering services to the people by the DA.

“We’re not surprised that a simple hiccup has been taken out of context by the opposition,” said Bulwane. “Under the ANC-led government, the municipality will continue to render services to the people of Mantsopa in a transparent manner.”
