Eric Tinkler confirmed as SuperSport coach

After ditching Cape Town City earlier on Thursday, Eric Tinkler has now been confirmed as the new coach at SuperSport United.

Tinkler made the controversial move to quit City to replace Stuart Baxter – who has moved on to the Bafana Bafana post for the second time – at Matsatsantsa on a three-year deal that will start on July 1.

The sudden departure of Tinkler from City upset chairman John Comitis, who told Independent Media earlier that he was “very disappointed” by the former Bafana midfielder’s decision to leave Cape Town for Pretoria.

“Every person has their reasons for the decisions they make and we have to respect that,” Comitis said.

“But this club is bigger than any individual… We are already hard at work to make the next step, to find the right fit that will last longer than a year.

“But, for us, as a club, nothing changes. We will continue to be as aggressive in our outlook and as enthusiastic in our approach to the game.”

In a club statement, City added that Tinkler chose to move after exercising a “buy-out clause” in his contract.

But City’s loss is SuperSport’s gain, and CEO Stan Matthews was delighted with his coup.

“We are excited about Eric taking the team forward. He has earned his stripes as an international player and as a coach,” Matthews said.

“He has a fantastic track record of both building young players and being fiercely competitive within the PSL.

“By qualifying for a variety of domestic and continental Cup finals, he has shown his potential to be one of the great South African coaches of the future.”

Cape Town City have stated that they have already identified a replacement for Tinkler, which they hope to announce in the next seven days. – IOL Sport
